Introduction

by David Hutchison | Last Updated: April 29, 2006

Although traveling by foot is still the primary means of traversing a war zone, the vehicles in Battlefield do offer fast transport between locations. Most are also equipped with powerful weaponry ranging from mini-guns to laser guided missiles that lock on to moving targets.

There are three basic categories of vehicles: land, air, and water. Two amphibious vehicles cross these categories since they can travel on both land and water.

Civilian

Civilian vehicles, such as the car and pickup truck, sport no military grade armor of any kind. Therefore, they offer next to no protection when attacked.

Nevertheless, civilian vehicles can effectively be used as a last resort or to quickly travel the less dangerous routes of a map. The snowmobile is also a fast (and exhilarating) mode of transport over snow-covered terrain.

In addition to the driver, these vehicles can accommodate a single passenger who can shoot from the sunroof (car), trailer bed (pickup truck), or rear position (snowmobile).

Vehicles:

    • Driver
    • Passenger (Troop Kit)
  • Pickup Truck

Jeeps

As the fastest and most manual of the land vehicles in Battlefield, jeeps are ideal for quickly transporting small groups of troops between strategic locations.

Light jeeps sport no armor, but they forsake protection for top speed and agility. In addition to the driver, they can accommodate up to two passengers.

Heavy jeeps are slightly slower, but afford somewhat better protection.

    • Driver
    • Gunner (Grenade Launcher)

Armored

Armored vehicles afford the greatest protection of any ground vehicle because of their heavy armor. Their armor is generally thickest at the front, making the rear and sides of an armored vehicle more vulnerable to attack. All of the armored vehicles in Battlefield are equipped with heavy firepower making them ideal choices for battle hardened firefights.

There are four categories of armored vehicles: armored personnel carriers (APCs), self-propelled artillery, anti-air vehicles, and tanks.

Vehicles:

  • LAV-300 (Amphibious)(U.S.)
    • Driver (Auto-cannon)
    • Gunner (Machine Gun)
  • Combat Vehicle 90 (EU)

  • ZSU-23-4 Shilka (MEC)

Boats

Although boats offer little in the way of protection against attack, they are ideal vehicles for moving between strategic locations that are close to water.

On island-based battlefields, use a boat to flank an unsuspecting enemy from the rear or sides. Run boats aground near out of the way positions where you and your squad are unlikely to be noticed.

  • Sea Ark Stinger (U.S.)
    • Pilot
    • Gunner (Grenade Launcher)
    • Gunner (Machine Gun)
  • Light Patrol Boat (China/MEC)

Helicopters

As every Battlefield wargamer knows only too well, the aircraft in this wargame can dominate a multiplayer match when well flown and strategically deployed.

The helicopters in the console editions of Battlefield (there are no planes) are far easier to fly than those in the PC version, making aircraft a palatable vehicle for almost any console gamer.

There are two types of helicopters. Attack helicopters are ideal assault aircraft. Transport helicopters are designed for use as troop carriers, but they are also formidable offensive weapons.
