Battlefield Tips

Reload! After every firefight, reload your weapon in order to ensure that you have a full ammo clip at the ready for the next firefight. Also restock on ammo whenever you are near an ammo crate.

When you join a multiplayer match mid-game, first take a moment to get up to speed on status of the game. Check out the full screen in game map to determine where to go and what to do.

Pay close attention to the slots on the lower left-hand corner of the heads up display (HUD) when getting into a vehicle. Whenever a fellow soldier takes his place in the vehicle, a slot gets filled in. You do not need to wait for him to fire his weapon to tell you that he's ready to roll.

Unlike Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, proximity to an object that is on fire will injure a soldier in Battlefield. (Yet more proof that Battlefield is more realistic than Ghost Recon :)

To restore a jeep or tank to full strength, park it next to the repair icon on a helipad. The vehicle's ammo will also be restocked.

Special Ops soldiers can plant up to nine charges of C4 before detonating them. After planting a C4 charge, press B to reload a new charge. Press the right trigger when finished to detonate the charges.

When crouched, press the left bumper pad to immediately stand up without cycling through the prone stance.

Introduction

by David Hutchison | Last Updated: April 3, 2006

There are five soldier classes in Battlefield. Each has it's advantages and specific role on the battlefield. Virtual soldiers are well advised to become specialists in a least one or two soldiers classes. Most importantly, virtual soldiers from different classes should work together in order to leverage each other's strengths to the fullest.

In addition to choosing a soldier class on each respawn, players can also change their soldier class during combat whenever they are next to a fallen soldier's weapon's kit (by pressing Y). This allows virtual soldiers to change their weapons load out on the fly as battlefield conditions warrant.

In addition to the five official soldier classes, there are two other combat roles of particular note. They are "driver" and "pilot." Look for extended tactical analyses of all of these soldier classes and roles in the weeks ahead.

Assault

The assault kit is arguably the most well rounded of the soldier classes in Battlefield. Ready to both shoot bullets and launch projectiles over long distances, this infantry soldier is equipped with a powerful assault rifle with grenade launcher attachment. Although primarily designed as an anti-infantry weapon, the grenade launcher is also moderately effective against vehicles and fixed assets. The assault soldier who is on point can also lob smoke grenades ahead of his advance in order to conceal his squad's approach to a target.

Weapons load out:

  • fully automatic assault rifle
  • grenade launcher
  • frag grenades
  • smoke grenades
  • pistol

Engineer

The engineer is the mechanic on the battlefield. Equipped with a blowtorch, he can repair damaged vehicles. He can also destroy vehicles by mining strategic routes and locations (e.g. a control point) with anti-vehicle land mines. With it's tremendous stopping power, the engineer's shotgun is one of the most effective close range weapons, ideal for close quarters combat. When it comes to long range combat, the engineer's rocket launcher can take out vehicles with one or two shots.

Weapons load out:

  • shotgun
  • rocket launcher
  • anti-vehicle mines
  • blowtorch
  • pistol

Sniper

The sniper class is the best choice for long range combat. Armed with a sniper rifle, a soldier can zoom in and lock on an enemy soldier from hundreds of feet away. A perfectly targeted sniper shot is one shot, one kill. Snipers should keep well away from the main fight by positioning themselves in a concealed location some distance away where they can pick off enemy soldiers from afar. Snipers are also equipped with two advanced technologies. The laser target designator can paint stationary or moving vehicles for targeting by laser guided missiles. The forward observer can briefly reveal to friendly soldiers (care of their mini-map) the locations of hostiles in the vicinity of the sniper.

Weapons load out:

  • multi zoom sniper rifle
  • laser target designator
  • forward observer
  • smoke grenades
  • pistol

Special Ops

The special operations class is devoted to stealth and demolition. However, the sub-machine gun also doubles as an effective offensive weapon. Many of the items in this soldier's gear, including the sub-machine gun, operate silently which helps to protect the special ops soldier from detection. This class of soldier can also plant and detonate C4 charges in strategic locations and on stationary and moving vehicles. This is the only class of soldier that is equipped with a knife for close range stealth kills.

Weapons load out:

  • sub-machine gun
  • C4 explosives
  • stun grenade
  • knife
  • silenced pistol

Support

The support soldier serves as both an infantryman and medic. Armed with a fully automatic machine gun, he can lay down full coverage suppressing fire that protects a fire team's approach. He can also heal wounded soldiers (and himself) with his auto-injector. In addition to lobbing frag grenades, the support soldier can call in devastating mortar strikes to the battlefield locations he targets.

Weapons load out:

  • machine gun
  • frag grenades
  • mortar strike designator
  • auto-injector
  • pistol
